Genteel Thistle
Unlike most of the fearsome weeds that grow here in Montana, this applique
and satin stitch thistle is quite well behaved. The design, originally
published in a 1901 British home decorating magazine for use as a stencil,
works equally well for needle work.

Gilmour Rose
Adapted from a brass repousse vase design by Glasgow Girl/Metalworker Margaret
Gilmour who, with her sister Mary, maintained a studio from 1893 to the early
1940s
The Gilmour Rose design introduces the use of 2 new materials, and 3 new
colors. The gorgeous Linen Canvas has a wonderful drape, and the Lustre Cord
silk floss is similar to the "rope silk" used on period embroidery kits.
Fringed ends are created from working the warp and weft threads, then hand
knotting.
Imagine the Gilmour Rose on the bottom of a curtain panel!

Glasgow Circles and Leaves
A near reproduction of a design published in Educational Needlecraft by
Margaret Swanson and Ann Macbeth, 1911. Both instructors of needlework, M.
Swanson published three additional books on teaching methods, and A. Macbeth
authored five.
Hand appliqued circles of chocolate and
are framed by satin stitched lines
of nickel. Opposing pairs of leaves and stems are worked in sage. On Cushion
Cover, petals are stitched in Hyacinth. Dyed linen on dark natural linen.

Glasgow Grapes
Ann Macbeth style applique leaves are joined by either Cabernet or Chardonnay
grapes.
During a recent wine tasting trip to Walla Walla Washington(where some of my
favorite wines are made), I asked a well seasoned wine grower/maker to pick
some colors from my silk palette that would reflect the hues of grapes on the
vine. I'm thankful for his help, and to the talents of a Master Dyer, also
located
in the Northwest, for the results are well balanced.

Iris
Based on a design by French Art Nouveau artist, M.P. Verneuil- while created
for a contemporary Japanese-American interior, it looks great anywhere! This
cushion cover design utilizes a heavy weight silk border that is couched, a
technique often used in Scottish embroidery design.

This design combines an English motto worked in Glasgow style lettering, with a
Glasgow floral motif.
The border is couched with extra heavy silk floss. Also available with more

Frame Mats
Designed for use in a frame, the linen is first embroidered, then wrapped over
acid-free mat board. A photograph may be attached to a thin backing board (not
supplied) or directly to the mat back with photo corners (included). Frame

CUSTOM FINISHES
|
Thistle Handwerks' textile edges are hand hemmed, unless specified.
The Glasgow style of embroidery often emphasized hems and seams with a variety
of techniques. Thistle Handwerks currently offers two different options for
custom finishing.
REVERSE HEMMING- this is identical to a standard hem, but is worked on the
right side of the piece.
DECORATIVE STITCHING- in addition to a reverse hem, French knots are worked on
top of the hem, parallel to the edge. Thread for the knots is acquired from
warp or weft threads, pulled from the linen or, groupings of straight stitches
can be added along inside edge of reverse hem, as seen on Glasgow Circles and
Leaves Runner.
Reverse hemming is available for an additional $30 per piece.
Decorative stitching cost varies due to piece size.

Please note that Cushion Covers do not come with an insert. While polyester
fill inserts are inexpensive and easy to obtain, they just don't look right.
Thistle Handwerks Cushion Covers are made to receive down or down/feather
inserts. If you live where they are not readily available, I do keep some in
stock. See prices below.
